Florida has opened the door to medical practice for physicians trained abroad without the headache of repeating residency in the United States.

Before 2024, a physician trained outside the United States who wanted to move here had one option: repeat residency.

That is what the Live Healthy Act changed. In Florida, the Board of Medicine no longer requires a repeated residency. You are licensed on the career you already have. It gives you the right to practice and to work in Florida.

Florida, however, asks for two consecutive years of full-time employment with a Florida healthcare provider.

The statuteFlorida Statute 458.311(8)(e) allows the Board of Medicine to license a foreign-trained physician without a U.S. residency, provided they hold an active unencumbered license abroad, have practiced for the four years preceding their application, completed postgraduate training the Board considers substantially similar to an ACGME residency, hold a valid ECFMG certificate, and have a full-time job offer from a Florida health care provider. Physicians licensed this way must remain with a Florida employer for at least two consecutive years.

One journey, six workstreams

Workstream 1

ECFMG certification

The gate into the American healthcare system. We cover the entire administrative process, from compiling your documentation to verifying your diplomas with your school and your regulator, through every form and every follow-up until the certificate is issued.

Your part: send us the paperwork you already have on hand. We chase down everything else and make sure it is all in place before anything is submitted.

Workstream 2

The USMLE exams

Most physicians come to us having taken no US exam at all. We build your study plan, find your English tutor and your USMLE tutor, book the exams, and handle everything around them: the flight, the hotel, and even the taxi to the test center.

Workstream 3

The job

The license requires two consecutive years of full-time employment with a Florida healthcare provider. This step shapes everything around it. We work through our relationships across the Florida healthcare market to identify employers in your specialty and open the right doors, then guide you through the recruiting process, from the first interview to an offer and its negotiation.

Your part: be yourself in the interviews, and make the decision that suits you. We prepare you for both.

Workstream 4

The license

We e-file all of your documentation for the license, and if necessary help present your case to the Florida licensing board alongside the best lawyers in Florida that we connect you with.

Your part: your signature, and a personal appearance before the Board if it requests one. We prepare you for it.

Workstream 5

Immigration

An immigration strategy shaped by your circumstances, whatever they may be. We appoint qualified US immigration counsel matched to your profile and manage the relationship throughout, so we remain your only point of contact.

Your part: your documentation and a clear picture of your family's plans.

Workstream 6

The move

Housing, school placement, banking, insurance, hospital credentialing. Whatever your first months in Florida require, we set it up before you arrive, so the move itself is the easy part.

FAQ

Do I have to redo a residency?

No. Fla. Stat. 458.311(8)(e) is written precisely so you do not have to. Florida licenses you on the career you have already built, rather than asking you to start it again.

I have not taken any US exam. Can I still do this?

Yes, and that is where most of our clients begin. We build the study plan, find your tutors and schedule all three USMLE Steps. The exams become a project with dates instead of an obstacle.

Is the license restricted or supervised?

Neither. It is a full, unrestricted Florida license. The conditions concern your employment, never your scope of practice.

How long does it take?

It depends on where you are starting from, above all your exams, your nationalities and your specialty. We do not publish average timelines, because an average tells you nothing about your own case. You get a dated plan for your own case before you commit to anything.

Can my spouse work in the US?

That can only be settled once we have built an immigration strategy for your case. Different routes grant a spouse very different work rights, so the answer follows from the route we choose with US immigration counsel.

Can I use the license in another state?

Not automatically. Every state sets its own rules, so each additional one needs its own route.
